What is OCIA?
The Order of Christian Initiation for Adults (OCIA) is a spiritual journey for anyone interested in learning about the Catholic faith. It is a process of formation and guidance, not just a class, designed to help individuals grow in their relationship with God and the Church.
The OCIA program at Christ the King welcomes all adults 18 and older on their unique journey of faith.
Who Can Join?
The OCIA program at Christ the King welcomes all adults 18 and older:
- Unbaptized
- Baptized in another Christian tradition
- Baptized Catholic but have not received formal religious training or the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist
Stages of the OCIA Journey
The OCIA journey is an extended period of conversion that is unique to each person. It is structured into distinct stages and marked by special rites within the parish community.
1Period of Evangelization and Precatechumenate
This is an informal period of inquiry where you can explore your interest in the Catholic faith. You will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with a member of the parish staff or OCIA team to discuss your faith journey, ask questions, and learn about the basics of Jesus Christ and the Church.
2Period of the Catechumenate
After a formal rite of welcome, you will enter this stage of deeper formation. Catechumens (those who are unbaptized) and Candidates (those who are already baptized) will learn about the Catholic faith through prayer, Scripture reflection, and discussion. This is a time to explore what it means to live a life of love, faith, and justice as a follower of Christ.
3Period of Purification and Enlightenment
Typically beginning at the start of Lent, this stage is an intensified period of spiritual preparation. For those preparing for Baptism, it is a time of prayer, fasting, and spiritual reflection as they prepare to receive the Sacraments of Initiation.
4Sacraments of Initiation
The journey culminates at the Easter Vigil, the most important liturgy of the Church year. Here, those who are unbaptized are initiated into the Catholic Church through the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Eucharist. Those already baptized will be confirmed and receive their First Holy Communion, becoming fully initiated members of the Church.
5Period of Mystagogy
After Easter, the newly initiated continue their formation and education. This stage, which means “leading into the mysteries,” is a time for the newly baptized to reflect on their experiences and learn more about living a sacramental life within the Catholic community.
